About this module

DragonBoost by Zyarexx (rakarmp on GitHub) is a performance tweak module for Qualcomm Snapdragon phones with an Adreno GPU, arm or arm64. The author advertises up to 75% more GPU/CPU performance; what it actually does is change a long list of GPU, CPU, memory and build properties at boot.

GPU changes

  • Turns off Adreno GPU throttling and adrenoboost.
  • Forces the GPU clock, bus and power rail to stay on, disables napping and sets max_pwrlevel to 0, the highest power level.
  • Enables adreno_idler and turns off the Adreno snapshot crash dumper.
  • Sets a batch of rendering properties, such as GPU composition, hwui.disable_vsync=true and hardware acceleration flags, through system.prop and again with setprop.

Keeping the GPU at full power with throttling off means more heat and battery drain, not just more speed.

Memory and ZRAM

  • Resets ZRAM to a 4 GB disk with a 4096 MB memory limit and 8 compression streams, and sets swappiness to 100. Any ZRAM size your ROM picked is replaced.
  • Writes new low memory killer minfree levels and turns off enable_lmk and adaptive LMK.
  • Changes VM settings such as dirty_ratio, min_free_kbytes, extra_free_kbytes and overcommit_memory, then drops caches.
  • Deletes /data/system/perfd/default_values.

CPU and scheduler

  • schedutil: faster ramp-up (up_rate_limit_us 500, down_rate_limit_us 2000, hispeed_load 85) and no iowait boost.
  • Turns off core_ctl so the system doesn't park cores, and sets the QTI core control properties to a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 CPUs.
  • Turns off LPM prediction and adjusts kernel scheduler values like sched_nr_migrate and sched_autogroup_enabled.

The tweaks start 20 seconds after boot and are applied in steps; about a minute and a half after boot you get a "DragonBoost Successfully Installed" notification.

Installation

  1. Check that your phone has a Snapdragon chip. The installer warns that it's for Snapdragon devices only.
  2. Install DragonBoost2.8.zip in Magisk (v20.4 or newer) or KernelSU.
  3. Reboot. To undo it, remove the module and reboot; the kernel values it writes don't survive a restart.

2.8 fixed an LPM issue and rewrote the value-writing logic; 2.7.1 fixed a bootloop and apps being force stopped. MIT licensed.
