ASL (Android Subsystem for GNU/Linux) runs Linux containers on rooted ARM64 Android devices. The RuriOSS project uses ruri as its container runtime and rurima to fetch distribution root filesystems, providing access to the installed environment through SSH.
GNU/Linux on ARM64 Android
Distribution-specific modules for a rooted Android environment.
Container runtime and images
ruri starts the container, while rurima retrieves its root filesystem. The installer downloads the selected distribution and configures its environment, so a working network connection is required.
Distribution choices
Release v1.0 includes Alpine, Arch Linux, CentOS, Debian, Fedora, Kali, and Ubuntu packages. Choose one package: the release notes specify that only one of these modules can be installed.
Installation and requirements
- Use a rooted arm64-v8a Android device. The installer supports installation through the Magisk, KernelSU, or APatch application and rejects other architectures.
- Choose a single distribution package and install it through the root manager. Maintain a stable network connection while the installer retrieves the root filesystem and configures Linux packages.
- Allow the installation and device restart to complete. The current installer schedules an automatic reboot after setup.
- Connect using SSH with the credentials below, then change the default password immediately.
The repository warns that compatibility with every device is not guaranteed. Reinstalling backs up the existing container directory and creates a new container; installing multiple operating systems by changing the module ID and SSH port is not officially supported.
Connecting to the container
The documented defaults are SSH port 22, user root, and password 123456. For a local connection, use ssh [email protected] from an SSH client. After logging in, run passwd to replace the default password.
Release and source versions
The available release is tagged v1.0. The current main branch identifies the module as v1.1.1 and credits Moe-hacker and Lin1328; it is newer than the published release. Installation details described here also reflect the current source, so behavior may differ in older release packages.
